Circular Lessons of Life

The circular path of life lessons,
Comes in a variety of shades. 
Some alone, others in combination
A doorway to heaven or to the kingdom of Hades

One keeps running into similar episodes
Till the learning is absorbed within
The lesson comes to us in multiple modes
There seems to be no escaping it

In case one has had the audacity to forget 
Life will come up with a revision of sort
A new and longer lasting lesson is all set
For one to repeat and on retest, not come up short

All that life asks us to do is to learn well
When a similar situation turns up later on
Find a new way to be and break the spell
Of past mistakes & choose a different path to move on

The heaven and hell is experienced here and now
One feels both as they go about their life on earth
Trying to learn what we must, and overcome somehow
Our discrepancies theses lessons attempt to unearth

मोड़

एक मुड़ती हुई सड़क थी, किनारे एक पेड़ था,  फैला हुआ समंदर, किनारे रेत का ढेर था,  मैं भी थी वहीँ कहीं, किसी टेहनी पर चींटी सी -  या लहरों सी खेलती हुई, या सब मेरे ख्वाबों का खेल था!  सोचती हूं कि उस मोड़ के आगे क्या और दुनिया बाकी है?  फिर याद आता है कि ये पेड़, ये समंदर, सभी तो मेरे साथी हैं,  क्या करूँ हिम्मत कुछ नया ढूँढने की, मोड़ से आगे बढ़ने की?  या रोक लूँ यहीं खुद को, मेरी उम्र के लिए यही काफी हैं!  रुई से बादल तो इशारा कर रहे हैं कि हिम्मत करो, आगे बढ़ो!  पुराने आराम की आदत है तुम्हें, पर नए हालातों से मत डरो! कुछ दिन बीतते ही नए दोस्त बना लोगे तुम, फिर वही आराम पा लोगे तुम, आसमाँ को देखते रहना, ये हर मोड़ पर मिलेगा, बस तुम आगे बढ़ो!

What’s in a married maiden’s name? India is a patriarchal society. In the first 30 years of my life, this fact has not bothered but once I got married, this reality has encountered me number of times. Now please don’t start thinking that I am some “abla nari” with monstrous in laws and spouse – um hmm, far from it. I have a fairly understanding spouse and super supportive in laws. So where do I come across this dilemma of patriarchy, especially after marriage? Well, I did marry at 30, with 8 years of work experience (and filed IT returns for each of those years) and have done my share of international travel. Therefore at the time of my marriage I had my PAN card (permanent account number), accounts, passport etc. in my maiden name. Never realising my folly and not taking my married name I continued in the blissful state of keeping my maiden name and not updating any of these to reflect my married name.
